HANDED TO ARMY
Binoculars Once Owned By “Bully” Hayes (P.A.) WANGANUI, Jan. 30. Binoculars with histories have been handed in at post offices in the Wanganui district in response to the Government’s appeal. Waitotara's contribution includes a pair of binoculars once owned by “Bully” Hayes, the pirate of the Pacific, whose exploits, lawful and unlawful, in the middle of the last century are still the subject of scores of stories in the South Seas. The glasses are owned by Mrs A. Turner, whose father received them from a friend who knew “Bully” Hayes. A telescope which has been to the South Pole is among those contributed in Waverley. Some Great War souvenirs handed in bear the marks of battle but they include expensive glasses from Germany.
