New Year Tournament Profit Of £l6 Because of the war situation, the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association last night decided not to take part in the quadrangular tournament at Dunedin between the South Canterbury, North Otago and Southland Associations. The meeting considered a letter from the Otago Association, suggesting February 21 for the tournament, if the South Canterbury Association favoured holding it. “I feel that this year we cannot see our way clear to send a team to Otago for the tournament, particularly in view of the international situation and the calls on manpower and womanpower," said the president (Mr J. S. Satterthwaite). The resolution not to participate in the tournament was carried without discussion. A preliminary financial statement on the New Year tournament showed an excess of income over expenditure of £l6/2/8, compared with £56/14/10 the previous year. The greatest fall in revenue occurred in gate takings, which fell from £7O/12/0 to £l5/15/0. Entry fees fell only from £5B/19/0 to £53/15/6. Had the weather been favourable the tournament would have proved as financially successful as in previous years, claimed the president. He paid a tribute to the work of the executive and to tennis players of South Canterbury and visitors for their co-oper-ation. He also thanked the officials and the ground staff. Arrangements for Mr G. Ollivier to visit Timaru between February 23 and February 28 to coach junior players were concluded. It was decided to resume the A grade games on February 14. The MidCanterbury representative match was set down for February 21 and the Canterbury match for March 7 or March 14. An A grade match was scheduled for February 14 and the junior tournament is to be played on February 28 and March 7.
