RUSSIAN FRONT
Winter Has Firm Grip (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON. Jan. 27. The Russians continued their offensive operations, and on the southern front recaptured 40 localities. The winter has taken a firmer grip throughout the Russians’ front. Seventy-two degrees of frost Fahrenheit are common from Kursk to Leningrad, and in some sectors there have been 90 degrees of frost. The Russians continue to advance in sectors from Kholm to the southern part of the central front. Their heavy sustained pressure in the Ukraine and Donetz fronts is apparently also carrying them steadily westward. The Germans admit fierce defensive fighting on these fronts.
