MEN FOR MILLS

Survey Of Labour Advised (P.A.) ASHBURTON, Jan. 28. The urgent need for mill-hands was brought before the Manpower Committee in Ashburton this morning by the chairman of the Primary Production Committee (Mr H. C. B. Withell), Mr W. Kellahan (on behalf of the millowners), and the State Placement Officer (Mr J. B. Pearson). There were about 18 mill-owners in the county, and the majority of them were unable to obtain labour, said Mr Kellahan. Mr Pearson said the supply of harvesters was sufficient, but it was impossible to get men as mill-hands, especially key men. Mr K. MacKenzie (chairman) suggested that the required men might be obtainable from camps if the names could be submitted. Mr Pearson explained that it was difficult to select men because they were casual labourers, and employers did not keep track of them. Tire chairman advised that a survey of the required labour be made and submitted to the Manpower Committee.
