W omens Notes

Mrs Herbert Elworthy, Craigmore, will leave to-morrow to stay with Mrs Harold Elworthy, Christchurch. Mrs Mary Raymond, Wai-iti Avenue, will leave to-day to stay with Mrs W. Raymond, The Poplars, Pleasant Point. Mrs Sholto Douglas, Woodbury, will leave on Monday on a visit to Mrs F. Goulburn Gibson, Christchurch. Mrs H. A. Talbot, of Dunedin, is the guest of Miss Campbell, Presbyterian Home, North Street. Miss M. M. Philpott has resigned her post as sister in charge of the Campbell-Johnstone maternity annexe at the Waikato Hospital, to take up a hospital appointment in Blenheim. Thirty women—first members of Britain's unofficial Home Guard—learned to snipe when they spent hours lying on a roof at Kingston-on-Thames receiving instruction from a Home Guard sergeant. Included in this “Amazon Army” are mothers, typists, telephonists, and ambulance drivers. "We don't Intend to be glamour girls," they said. “We claim equality with men and are willing to submit to discipline." Appreciation of the work which Lady Pomare, 0.8. E., is doing among her people was expressed by the Rev. Fathers Hughes and Venning at an “open evening” held recently by the Te Maramatanga Catholic Maori Club. In the last war Lady Pomare and her husband. the late Sir Maui Pomare, were unsparing of themselves in all patriotic work, and specially in connection with Maori soldiers. Lady Pomare has again come forward to continue this work, and has organised strong Maori committees. These care for Maori soldiers prior to leaving for overseas and those who return from active service. Another of Lady Pomare’s interests is in the care and visiting of Maoris in hospital. Among the guests was Sister Jane Nepia. the first Maori nurse to be chosen for active service overseas.
