GERALDINE KOWHAI TREES PLANTED

Women’s Institutes’ Function

Beautifying Main Highway

Trees were planted on the new State highway between Rangitata and Orari by members of the South Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes at their annual tree planting ceremony.

Before planting the trees Mrs P. W. Hislop (chairwoman of the tree planting committee) asked those present to stand in silence as a mark of respect to their president, who had suffered a bereavement.

Ten kowhai trees were planted by the following:—Mrs Prattley (Orari), Miss Austen (Mt. Nessing), Mrs Harvey (Orari W.1.), Rosewill W.1., Mrs Blackham (Federation). All arrangements were in the hands of Mrs Hislop and praise for her work was extended by the members. Trees planted last year are making excellent progress.

WOODBURY SCHOOL JUBILEE

The approaching diamond Jubilee of the Woodbury ’chool was discussed at a meeting at Woodbury when the following committee was elected with

power to add:—Messrs F. J. Wood (chairman), T. Scott, J. G. Cain, A. J.

Flfield. R. Brown, L. Fifield, J. L. McKeo zn, and M. L. Wooding.

It was suggested that a function should be held on October 4. A special meeting will be held on September 11 to discuss the form of the celebrations.

Messrs J. L. McKeown ind M. L. Wooding were appointed joint secretaries.

CHURCH PARADE In spite of the inclement weather there was a good parade of members of the Geraldine Company of the County Battalion of the Home Guard and members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment at the service at St. Mary’s Church last Sunday when the National Day of Prayer was observed. TABLE TENNIS EVENING Members of the Geraldine Volunteer Fire Brigade were the guests of Toe H on Monday evening when a table tennis evening was held. The match resulted in a win for Toe H by 21 games to 11. Mr A. Mackay expressed thanks to Toe H for the enjoyable evening end Mr H. A. Robertson replied on behalf of Toe H. BASKETBALL TEAMS The following teams have been selected for a Possibles v. Probables match in conjunction with the Geraldine County Basketball Association’s closing tournament on Saturday in aid of patriotic funds:— Possibles: E. Thompson, Betty Armstrong. H. Pierce. E.
