PRODUCE MARKETS CHBISTCIIURCH (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, £:pt. c Chief interest in the rain and produce markets this seek has been the announcement by the Government that it woulc. bring into New Zealand potatoes from ..ustralia. This will be the first importation of any consequence since about 1924 when Australia first dec' ned to allow New Zealand potatoes to be xported to Aus - tralia. The market locally has not j far reacted as much as might have been expected, whites and Dakotas showing a drop of 10/- to 15/- a ton, and Suttons a drop of £1 a ton on the figure quoted last week-end, but b-..si-ness in potatoes has almost ceasel c l any quotation ! > r..ore or less no: linal. It is underst" , -d that the Gonrement purchase is for supply to military camps, but as the camps have be: important buyers of potatoes recently, the rei al this source of buying from the normal market may have a greater effect than has become apparent so far. Th: Government has inform:J the trade that potatoes for its own requirements will be handled through the Mam,eting Department, but it is mderstood that a request that outside this . itatoes imported from Australia should be handled through normal channels of the trade has drawn no promise from th? Government. It is believed that tw shipments of Australian p tatoes have already arrived or have been arranged, and that more are contemplated, but there is no formation on what quantity will be ii ported, when or where the. ..'‘ll arrii., or -.’hat ic? has been paid for them. For a mu - ber of year- it has been possible to import Australian potatoes by permit, but there is no record tnat any perr it

has been issued. The lifting of what has virtually a._ anted to a ban may possibly mean that the Australian Government has tr ' u c> ’sideration ’he relaxa lon of i n tan on New Zealand ootatoe

The on.on prsitior. locally has weakened. There is no change in the quotation which rei- -is nominal at £l2, bt there are reports that buyers have been making inquiries in the north for their requiremens. Offe. ■ ings here are fairly free, but the season is lat' and rejections are apt to be heavy. The small seeds maiket remains unchanged « vtry little business . .ssing in any ” re The "nal increment has gone on to the price of wheat, the quotation having risen by Jd a bushel.
