The temporary suspension of the coach of the Linwood senior Rugby team (who is also club captain of the Linwood Club), was announced at the conclusion of an inquiry held by the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union to-night into the playing of an unretastated League player in the club’s senior team on two successive Saturdays. The Union exonerated the club from responsibility for the breach and decided to refer the matter to the New Zealand Rugby Union for consideration. Mr J. K. Moloney said it was a pity the original discussion was not held to committee. “It did not do the game any good,” he said. “After taking it in open meeting last week it will look as if we are trying to cover something up,” objected Mr W. A. Britten. Messrs A. E. McPhail and J. N. Clarke also spoke to favour of going into committee, the former saying that it would only make newspaper copy that was of no use to the game, and the latter remarking that the union had “no need to wash its dirty linen in public.” Tile player, Berl, has since been reinstated by the New Zealand Rugby Union. A letter to this effect was read at the meeting of the committee tonight.
