EXEMPTION FOR ASSISTANTS WANTED NEW PLYMOUTH, May 20. The exemption of cheese factory # SS nX al 2^ s i rom overseas service to facilitate the increase in production called for by the British Government was urged in a resolution carried by i h . T^ rt } nakl bl ’anch of the New Zealand ’Dairy Factory Managers’ Association. The resolution, which was passed as a recommendation to the annual meeting of the Association at Hamilton on May 28, states: of the request by the ImK™ Government for an addltlbnal 45,000 tons of cheese this meeting considers it essential that the Minister of National Service should take immediate steps to retain the services of a sufficient number of cheese factory assistants to carry out the work, more especially in the face of the necessity of double shifts in a number of factories and, further, that such assistants now in camp should be released from active service abroad and transferred to the manufacturing department of the dairy industry.

An ancient mariner seated on a bench in the sun on ‘the Auckland waterfront, smoking his pipe, was yarning to his mates about some of his seafaring experiences. “Ah!” he said, pressing down the tobacco with a homy forefinger, “it’s me that ’as ’ad some rough spins afloat, and no error. Why, once the old windjammer I was bosun of ran clean out of ’bacca, and we were only 40 days out from Tilbury Docks to Noo Zealand. What did we smoke? Why, we smoked dried tealeaves. "Twas that or nothing. First shore leave we got we bolted for the nearest general store and bought some black plug—awful stuff. You blokes are better off. Prime ‘toasted’ to be ’ad at any terbacconist’s. It’s the best I ever smoked, bar none. I like Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), but there’s milder toasted brands, I believe.” There are —four—Riverhead Gold, Desert Gold, Cavendish and Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog). They’re not only “prime,” but being toasted, are as harmless as fresh. air. No nicotine to speak of in any of them
