AMAZING ESCAPE

ARMCHAIR SAVED LIFE A high-explosive bomb demolished a house in an English south-east town, killing the five-year-old daughter of Mr G. F. Smith and his 82-year-old mother. Mr Smith’s wife, who was taken to hospital, and his 13-year-old son, working in- a study comparatively undamaged, were the other people in the house. Mrs Smith’s life was saved because the armchair in which she was sitting was blown over and formed a shield between her and the falling brickwork. Mr Smith returned to the house about ten minutes later. He did not know what happened until the headlights of his car picked out the ruins as he turned into the drive.
