GERMAN ATTACK ON CRETE

Parachute Troops Attempt To Storm Island (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, May 20. CRETE WAS ATTACKED by German parachute troops early this morning. A communique states that German parachute and air-borne troops made an attempt to secure a footing on the Greek Island of Crete early this morning. A number of them have already been accounted for. Crete is defended by Imperial and Greek troops under the Command of Major-General B. C. Freyberg, V.C., commander of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. The strength of the defending force is not known, but it is reported that two divisions of the Greek Army recently arrived at the Island.
