WAIHI BASKETBALL CLUB

The success of the first year was very pleasing as the team won the senior section of the Geraldine County Basketball Association’s competition, stated the annual report of the Waihi Basketball Club, presented at the annual meeting on Wednesday night. The team was also runner-up in the opening tournament and winner of the losing tournament. During the season one friendly match was played with Convent Old Girls at Ashburton. It was hoped to continue these friendly matches with outside teams. The election of officers resulted: Patron, Mr F. Piper; patroness, Mrs E. R. Guinness; president, Mrs A. J. Burmester; vice-presidents, Mesdames C. C. Knight, F. W. Bean, J. Powell, L. A Glanville,-J. N, Willis, J. R. Hawcridge, T. H. Hughes, E. N. J. Hannah, R. J. Wilson. Miss D. Undrill, Rev. Father M. J. Fogarty and Mr D. C. McKechnie; secretary and treasurer, Miss M. Gresham; general committee to comprise all club members. The question of a coach was left over until a further meeting. Beattie took place at Geraldine and the high esteem in which he was held was reflected in the number of people from the surrounding districts, who attended. The Rev. W. R. Lapsley conducted a service at the residence and also officiated at' the graveside. The pallbearers were Messrs Thos. Lyon, F. Donnithorne, F. Mitchell, C. W. Lynn, H. Rowe and E. Lyons. Mr Beattie is survived by his widow and one daughter, Mrs C. W. Lynn (Te Moana) and one son. Mr Laurence Beattie, of Hilton, There are six grandchildren. "BEAU GESTE” Based on the famous novel by P. C. Wren, “Beau Geste,” starring Gaiy Cooper and Ray Milland, will be screened at the Geraldine Municipal Theatre to-night and to-morrow night at 8 o’clock. It tells of the adventures of three brothers, who come together in stirring adventure in the Foreign Legion. There are excellent supporting features. Mr E. Cholerton, optical specialist, proprietor of “Procter’s,” will be visiting Geraldine personally on Wednesday, May 14, when he may be consulted on all defects of eyesight at the Crown Hotel.
