TEMUKA TRIBUTES PAID

President Retiring Meeting Of R.S.A. After five years as president of the Ternuka branch of the R.S.A., Mr A. R. Beck stated at the final meeting of the committee on Wednesday evening that he would not seek re-election. His term of office had been a happy one, and that was owing to the cooperation which he had received from the committee and from the secretary (Mr G. C. Tully). In asking for the same support for his successor, Mr Beck thanked members for the help they had given him.

Replying on behalf of the committee, Mr W. Spillane said it was regretted that Mr Beck was not seeking re-election. During his five years as president he had proved a worthy leader and had acted wisely and justly in his dealings with members. He hoped that the same happy family would be evident when the new president took office. Mr Tully endorsed the remarks of Mr Spillane and said that he had not worked with a more able and amiable chairman.

Since it was considered that the present method of allocating Canteen Funds did not meet with general approval. Headquarters advised that the Dominion Council would consider the matter at the forthcoming annual meeting, and asked for an opinion. So that provision might be made where necessity was greatest. Headquarters suggested a table by which four rates mignt be used in districts as indicated: 8,000 and over; 1,000 and under 8,000; 500 and under 1,000; under 500.

Mr Stanley: It is as easy to starve in the country as in the town. Why should there be a preferential rate for cities? Mr Tully: The War Relief Society allocated on the basis of the number of unemployed returned soldiers. Why should Auckland get a greater grant per head than Ternuka? Mr W. Spillane: The cost of living may be dearer in cities than in towns like Ternuka, but cities enjoy the existence of societies which are not common to small towns. The Red Cross Society in cities supply necessitous cases with suits each year. On the motion of Mr Stanley, it was agreed to suggest that the allocation be made on a flat rate on a population The president reported that the Poppy Day appeal had realised £BB/19/6. The nag appeal, which was made among returned soldiers on Anzac Day amounted to £ll. The parade was one of the largest seen in the district for many years. A vote of thanks was due to the caretaker of the Cemetery (Mr S. Southby), who had the graves of returned soldiers in excellent condition. His work was a credit to him. It was agreed to hold the annual meeting on May 22. A motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr D. J. Cornelius.
