AFTER THE FLOOD

E.P.S. CLEANING UP (P.A.) PALMERSTON N.. May 7. A survey of part of the city affected by the flood, mainly the Hokowhitu suburb, shows that 60 houses were evacuated. The city council and EPS. workers are engaged in hosing out houses and general cleaning up, including the streets. Tons of wet bedding were dried last night in the box factory’s kiln, the timber drier kiln being reloaded today. Working under the E.P.S. are members of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary, Red Cross Society and United Guild, and a number of nonnai peace time women’s organisations. These women are assisting in caring for furniture submerged in the flood and in carrying out other springcleaning operations. Persons not. having friends assisting them are most grateful for this aid. The associate Minister of National Service (the Hon. D. Wilson), accompanied by officials of the Treasury, yesterday visited the city and adjacent areas affected at the invitation of Mr J. Hodgens, M.P., to ascertain if and where aid was required. The party left to-day to inspect districts in lower Manawatu, where a big flood now covers the Buckley area near Shannon.
