CAROLINE BAY

Sir, —Mr Foote’s article on Caroline Bay and his suggested Improvements make Interesting reading and If It was peacetime some of them might be worth looking into. At present, when the crying need Is for money to prosecute the war, his suggestions are ill-timed, and show a total lack of appreciation of the present position. One thing Mr Foote did not fell us. That is how he proposed to find the money that would be required to carry out his scheme. It is admitted that the approach to the Bay from the south needs attention, but if it Is to cost £2OOO as Mr Foote suggests, it Is out of the question. Already by the look of things the rates will have to go up again to meet local :body requirements and taking every- . thing into consideration this Is no time to be spending a lot more money on “Timaru’s pampered child." Caroline Bay Is quite all right as it is and can well do without having any more money spent on It, except for upkeep, until the War is over. lam afraid fhat Mr Foote is like many other public men who seem to think their chief duty is to spend money in order to gain some kudos for themselves—l am, etc., CITIZEN. Timaru, May 5. Sir,—l am particularly Interested in the following sentence in Archdeacon Monaghan’s letter of May 2: “There are sure to be many who will be sorry to See the natural beauty of the Bay further encumbered with artiflclal structures, and who do not set much store on turning it into a permanent amusement park.” Yes, I know there are many people who will be dismayed at further efforts to turn the Bay into a kind of Earl’s Court in a sliver setting. The most disturbing of Mr Foote’s suggestions is the horrible one of a coloured fountain. Are not the lovely changing colours of the sea enough colour for him? This hideous suggestion would be the crowning stroke in vulgarising the Bay. Christchurch has spoiled Victoria Square with one. Let us be warned. I hope all people who have a love of natural beauty and good taste will unite to prevent this calamity. —I am, etc., B.F. Timaru, May 6.
