Mr J. G. Leckie is expected to return from Wellington at the end of the week. The Hon. W. Nash and the Hon. P. C. Webb reached Dunedin on Monday night from Milford. The Mayor of Waimate (Mr G. Dash) intimated at the meeting of the Waimate Borough Council last night that he intends to offer himself for re-election at the local body elections in May. “The end of our term of office draws close," said Mr Dash. “War conditions face us. I am therefore Impelled, although now completing my eighteenth year as Mayor of Waimate, to carry on the work if it is the wish of the burgesses.” Mr J. M. Curtis, sub-inspector in the Bank of Australasia, retired on Saturday after 43 years’ service. He joined the bank in Australia in 1898 and came to New Zealand in 1905. He served in various branches of the bank in the Dominion and was manager of the Tauranga, Whakatane, Rotorua, and Hastings branches, being at Hastings at the time of the earthquake in 1931. Mr Curtis served overseas for nearly four years during the Great War. He was with the .Otago Regiment for two years and then received his commission and Joined the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He has been sub-inspector with headquarters at Wellington for the last seven years, although his duties took him throughout New Zealand and to Australia. He intends to spend his retirement in Australia.
