SIAMESE WARSHIPS SUNK
French Successes Claimed
By T-legronh—Press Association— Copyright (Received January 19, 6.30 p.m.) SAIGON, January 17. French warships in the Gulf of Siam are reported to have sunk two Siamese warships yesterday and damaged a third. It is also reported that 600 Siamese were killed and wounded in neavy fighting on the Siam and Indo-China border, while French planes are reported to have bombed towns along the railway leading from the coast to Bangkok. American oilmen arriving from the frontier to-day said th? border war was far more serious than had been realised.
According to a message from Bangkok the High Command said the French Fleet attacked the Thai Fleet at Kochang on Friday. In the ensuing three hour battle Thai planes and warships drove off the French vessels all of which were badly damaged. The Thai warships were slightly damaged. Thai troops have occupied new positions in the Aranya sector after heavy fighting in which 200 French corpses were abandoned in the field.
