RICCARTON NOTES

NEW YEAR MEETINGS (Special to "The Timaru Herald.") CHRISTCHURCH, December 30. Most of the Riccarton horses who raced last week will be in action again at the New Year meetings. Of those who were at Wingatui there may be a few visitors to Southland. J. McLean is booked for that trip, and with Happy Night and Gold Don in form, he should pay his way, as his maiden candidate, Palo Alto is a promising young horse. H. Nurse also had Southland In view when he left here but his three horses ran badly at Wingatui and will need to Improve a lot to win at Wyndham or Invercargill. It is of interest to note that they have been nominated at Greymouth but I understand they are to carry out the Southland programme. Although an acceptor for the Waikouaiti Cup, Schoolgirl will not fulfil that engagement, as she has been sent on to Invercargill. She was a trifle sore on Saturday and it was considered inadvisable to run her again at Wingatui. Apart from that, she Is very well, and if the track Is easy she will be hard to beat in the chief events at Invercargill. S. Barr will take only two of his team to the Waikouaiti and Oamaru meetings. Sham Boy is a prospect, but Raeburn is too unreliable. Recollection was sent home, also Night Dress, who went wrong while at Wingatui. C. Davey may have two horses to race at Waikouaiti and Oamaru, with Kurawhi the more promising of the pair. This brother to Raeburn may, in fact, go on to useful class. H. R. Davies expects to take his three that were at Wingatui to Oamaru this week. Muffler did not produce his best last week but Rue gave indications

that a win is due soon. Sovereign Lady has seen her best day. F. A. Roberts brought Caiypso and Not Out home but will have Gold Nugget at Waikouaiti and Oamaru. Having struck winning form, he may show up again this week, though he does not appeal as more than a moderate Derby will go south for the maiden race at Oamaru. She is a three-year-old filly by Defoe from Malmsey, and her track form suggests that she will make a useful performer. C. C. McCarthy has engagements for three of his lot at Waikouaiti and Oamaru. Trench Fight and Cymric appeal as likely winners. Dranoel has been under veterinary treatment and may not be at his best for the trip. G. Ridgway will go south with three who did not race last week. Lord Midas has not shown form lor seine time but he is well. Lockheed has given promise and he should get some money. Master Flash is a speedy maiden, with prospects of improving. W J Cameron should get some money with Knight Commander, who has struck form and is partial to firm going. R. Register won recently with Circular Note who will continue to pay his way, being likely to improve. G. Shaw has Rebel Star looking well but he has had no racing lately and a seven furlong journey is his outside will take F. D. Jones’s pair, King’s Toast and Erambie, to Oamaru, where both horses should earn money. H Cutts brought Pleading home, waiting for the Oamaru meeting. His successes at Wingatui brought his winnings, all this season up to exactly £5OO, so he is now out of hack class. He has been entered for open events at Trentham. Eulogist developed trouble in one of his heels on the Wingatui trip and J. H Prosser decided to miss Waikouaiti and Oamaru. The horse was brought home and it looks as if he will need a good rest. When he comes back he may go on to good class. Doria, Alias, Palfrey, Espionage. Scarteen and Donadea arrived home yesterday, as they had no engagements in the south after the Dunedin meeting. . , , . H. and A. Cutts have nominated six of their team for the Wellington meeting They are Winning Rival, Good Passage, Wild Fox. Willow Wood. Pleading and Bird of Prey.

“I had anything but a good run for about a mile and a-half,” said A. E. Ellis, after he rode Beau Vite to victory in the Auckland Cup. “However, after getting a handy position at this point and feeling my mount going very well, I was confident of success. I was not the least perturbed when Beau Leon made his sudden dash, as Old Bill, who was going nicely, looked to be the one Beau Vite would have to beat. When I asked Beau Vite for a final effort, he responded splendidly, and was going away at the end. Beau Vite was a class above the opposition." The success of Beau Vite gave Ellis his second win in the race, his other victory being on Fast Passage in 1932. He rode Beau Vite to victory in the Great Northern Derby last year. Ellis scored with Vintage in the Wellington Cup of 1935, and has been successful in most of the important handicap and classic races in the Dominion.
