The first four months of the season have established Royal Chief as the best weight-for-age performer and stayer in the Dominion. The position may be changed if Beau Vite races here, but in the meantime the Chief Ruler horse stands supreme. It has been said that two miles is not his best distance, but he was second in a fast Sydney Cup and would almost certainly have accounted for the opposition in the New Zealand Cup if the track had been in the same condition as on Metropolitan Day. Payroll is entitled to be ranked No. 1 among the two-year-olds, and Enrich among the three-year-olds, but his superiority is not so clearly defined. There was not much more than two lengths covering Enrich, Don’t Forget, Beau Leon, Sir Beau and Belle Cane in the Derby, and anything is liable to happen in this division. The situation in the sprinting division needs clarification. No race so far has brought together all the best horses. Amigo beat Kathbella at Trentham, but by no big margin, and perhaps would be topweight in any six furlongs handicap, but Nigger Boy toyed with his opponents at Riccarton, and his real worth has yet to be revealed. There is a prejudice against Nigger Minstrel’s stock, but this horse was a brother to Desert Gold and had he been as sound as the mare he might have been equally famous. Sir Crusoe is an up-and-coming customer, and there is always the possibility of some other horse making an ascent as rapid as that of Nigger Boy.
