Representative Match South Canterbury Beaten On First Innings Playing in the Minor Associations Trophy competition at Ashburton yesterday, the South Canterbury senior cricket representatives were defeated by Ashburton on the, first innings by 143 runs to 101. „ L * ... Conditions were perfect for cricket and the wicket at the Domain Oval, although slightly damp on top, was fairly easy. Ashburton batted first and Edward and H. Jordan opened brightly puttiag on 24 before the first wicket fell. From that time the Timaru bowling attack subdued the batsmen and the rate of scoring was fairly slow. A collapse appeared imminent when the third; fourth and fifth wickets fell with the score at 35, but H. E. Cook and A. W. Saunders were associated in a valuable knock which carried the score to 76, when both were dismissed. L. Moore followed at 79. The tail wagged very effectively to give the home side the respectable total of 143. H. Holloway and L O Talbot added 30 and P. Zouch joined Talbot in a last wicket partnership which added another 34. The two last wickets all but doubled the score. P Gifford and L. Butterfield opened for South Canterbury. Giffords wicket fell at 13. Earwaker’s at 14, and Weir, who managed to hold his end up for Butterfield to score, went at 28. When Butterfield was dismissed he had contributed 42 out of 54 runs. His tally included three sixes and three fours. The only other South Canterbury batsman to make a stand was W. McDonald who played the bowling cautiously and scored mostly in singles.
