H.M.A.S. AUSTRALIA AT DAKAR
Sank Destroyer And Captured Cruiser By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received Nov. 25, 6.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, November 25. Letters received by relatives from ratings say that the cruiser Australia sank the French destroyer Audaceiux and captured the cruiser Gloire in the naval engagement off Dakar in September. Both the French warships were among the six French ships which escaped through Gibraltar to Dakar the week before General de Gaulle’s attempt to land there. The Minister of the Navy (Mr W. M. Hughes) confirms the report that the Australia was at Dakar but has no knowledge of the engagement with the French warships.
