TO JOIN DE GAULLE
Crews Of Repatriation Ships By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright (Received November 24, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, November 23. Fifty per cent of the crews of two large ships sent to Britain by the Vichy Government to repatriate French soldiers and sailors decided to remain and join up with General de Gaulle. A member of the crew addressing those to be repatriated said: “If you still want to live under the bodies you are welcome, but without our help.” Another said: “We prefer to stay and fight. We have seen what is happening in our poor country.” The ships arrived without lifeboats and inadequate life-saving gear. It is now revealed that 50 French officers and 1500 ratings anxious to be repatriated in September changed their minds and joined General de Gaulle.
