C.Y.C. BIVOUAC

C Squadron At Washdyke "The officers and non-commissioned officers of C Squadron, Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry, carried out a most successful bivouac at the Washdyke racecourse during the week-end. Efficiency and still more efficiency is the motto of the Army, and the hard work carried out during the week-end was an indication of the Intensive training to come. Special consideration was given to Hotchkiss gun training, and bayonet exercises were carried out in a spirited manner. This work is a very important part of the soldier’s training, and the non-commissioned officers demonstrated a very high degree of ability. Field craft, map reading and shooting were also included in the syllabus for training. Lieutenant H. H. Elworthy was in command of the bivouac, the men representing Cave, Temuka, Waimate, Timaru and Geraldine. During the week-end a visit was made by Lieuten-ant-Colonel L. R. C. Macfarlane, M.C., V.D., Officer Commanding the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalry. Appeal for Horses An officer Informed a “Timaru Herald" reporter who visited the bivouac yesterday that 170 horses, the best possible available in South Canterbury, were urgently required. A fee of £5 would be paid for the hire of every horse accepted. The names of persons willing to supply horses should be handed to stock inspectors, secretaries of branches of the Farmers’ Union, and A. and P. Associations or officers of the Regiment. They were required as soon as possible as the examination of the animals would commence within the next few weeks. The horses would be needed for camps in March and April. The speaker took the opportunity to express appreciation of the generosity of the racecourse authorities in making their facilities available for the bivouac.
