MY DREAM
One day I sat me down to read Beside a tree of may, The bees were humming drowsily, For sunny was the day. The heavy fragrance of the flowers, The soft and balffily air, Made me feel sleepy and I laid My book beside me there. When suddenly beside me stood An Impish little elf, Who said, “I am so lonely Playing by myself. “Oh! won’t you come and play with me For just a little while,” He had a pleading little voice And gave a wistful smile.
So I arose and soon we two Were having lots of fun And playing all the elfin games Beneath the warm spring sun. And then he climbed my tree of may And shook the petals free, They fell like snow upon the grass That grew about the tree. At last upon a mound there sat A tired little elf, Who went to sleep and I was left All lonely by myself. A wind arose and I awoke, And found I’d dreamed it all, For though upon the ground there lay The sweet white petals of the may. No elf came to my call. (5 Marks to Daphne Hopkinson, age 10.)
