Operation For Shikari Affected In The Wind (Special to “The Timaru Herald.") CHRISTCHURCH, November 22. When Shikari finished up his two-year-old racing with a win in the Challenge Stakes at Easter, it looked as if the BUlandshar-Capercailzie colt was on the way to Derby class, and It was bad luck for his connections when he showed signs, early this season, of being affected in the wind. The trouble has developed and his race prospects do not look bright, on the form he has shown lately. Mr G. R. Macdonald has decided to have his handsome colt operated on and if it is a success we may, before the season ends, see Shikari justifying the promise of his two-year-old days. Dictate has recovered from the bad luck he suffered when he was galloped on in the New Zealand Cup, his legs having . cleaned up nicely. He still shows signs, however, of a bruised foot. The Chief Ruler gelding has been trained for some time by his owner’s son, M. O’Brien, Jr., but he has secured a business appointment,, which will necessitate a change after the Ashburton meeting. Dictate may go into J. C. Tomkinson’s stable, but the position is complicated by the fact that Tomkinson is due for the home service camp early in the New Year. Trip North F. A. Roberts expects to make a trip north for the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting. In the meantime, the grey two-year-old, Salutation, is the only member of his team for whom definite plans have been made. This big Theio filly finished fast in each of her races at Riccarton and she will be much harder to beat over longer journeys. Roberts would like to take Not Out also when he goes to Auckland, but so far the intentions of Mr G. Gould are not known. After his second to Nigger Boy in the Members’ Handicap, Not Out should be a good prospect. Scottish Dale is the name that Mr J. R. McKenzie has chosen for his two-year-old filly by Foxbridge from Drama. F. D. Jones gave her a lot of work and she showed plenty of speed. She has now been sent home, to be spelled for about two months. She may not be raced this season, but she should develop into a good three-year-old. Few Months’ Spell The three-year-old gelding, Big Game, by Friday Night from Greylass, has been sent home and he will be spelled for a few months. He showed great promise while F. Christmas had him in work but splint troubles made a rest desirable. His box has been filled by his two-year-old brother, Sir Grey, who, though not so big, shows a lot of quality, while he has been well reared. This applies to all that horses that Mr J. Munro sends down from his stud in North Canterbury. When A. Mclntosh was here with Sly Fox, he arranged to send two novices to Riccarton and they are expected to arrive as soon as shipping transport from Gisborne can be fixed uu. A three-year-old by Commandant (an Australian-bred horse by Legionnaire) will be handled by D. Cotton, while F. Christmas will take over a two-year-old by Sporting Blood. F. D. Jones has a very nice filly foal by Solicitor General from his Lord Warden-Pitbrow Lass mare, Minehead, the dam of Nightshift. Career of Capricious Unless Mr H. D. Greenwood changes his plans, the racing career of Capricious came to an end when she was fourth in the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday. The Night-raid-Egotism mare won three races as a three-vear-old (two small events on the West Coast, after which she beat some useful hacks over a mile two furloners and a half at Wingatui), earning £322 in her winning efforts. Last season she was placed ten times, including second in the New Zealand Cup, third in the Metropolitan Handicap and second in the Dunedin Cud, while this season she finished fourth in the New Zealand Cup and Metropolitan Handicao, but secured third money when the rider of Little Robin failed to draw the weight. Since she was three years old she has not won a race, and still is eligible for hack events. In these, however, she is unable to give away the weight she has to concede to improving hacks, while her placlngs in big races have earned for her burdens which seem just encueh to prevent success in onen company. Mr Greenwood has therefore decided to retire her. It is nrobable she will be spelled till next spring, when she may be mated with Defaulter. High Caste is easily the hardestworked good horse in Australia. One of the heaviest gallopers ever seen, he is a remarkably lieht feeder. He is nevertheless a glutton for work, does more walking than any other horse in training, provides the highlights on “fast” mornings, and is not kept to look at. Broken tails or bruised heels do not seem to embarrass him. Known as the Strawberry Bull, the big New Zealander was suspected of softness a year ago. but he has gone on to outlast all his opponents. He started in 21 races last season—a big programme for a class three-year-old—and in three months in the current term he has run 13 times. He has tackled all distances up to a mile and a half, and has carried loads up to 10.1. In Melbourne now he is said to be as tough as Carbine. Referring to his break with J. T. Jamieson over the Linlithgow Stakes at Flemington, Mr Alan Cooper said:— “Jamieson and I have parted with an understanding and without any ill-feel-ing on my part,” said Mr Cooper. “Jamieson has done a particularly good job in his training of Gold Salute, whose record since he has been in that stable is proof of that. I wanted to run Gold Salute, and was not prepared to stand down even though the trainer prefers not to have two horses engaged in the same race. This was not the first time two from the stable have run. I consider that I have met other stable interests in a reasonable manner so far as programmes for the horses are concerned.” Mr Tancred, the owner of High Caste, offered to toss Mr Cooper for starters, the loser to .scratch his horse, but Mr Cooper declined.

Biworthy did not return north after racing at Addington, as it is felt that there are comparatively few opportunities for the Worthy Bingen gelding In Wellington, and he would be better placed In handicaps in the south. He is a consistent tittle trotter who rarely runs a bad race.
