RHODES SCHOLARS

Successful Candidates By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, November 22. Sitting at Government House this afternoon, the New Zealand selection committee appointed by the Rhodes Trustees, the Governor-General (Viscount Galway), the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, Major-General Sir Andrew Russell, the Chancellor of the University of New Zealand (Dr. the Hon. J. A. Hanan), the chairman of the Academic Board of the University (Dr. J. Hight, C.M.G.), Dr. A. L. Haslam and Mr S. N. Ziman chose from 11 nominations two 1941 Rhodes Scholars. The successful candidates wre: Alan Stewart, Massey Agricultural College. Jack Seddon Rumbold, Canterbury University College. Jack Seddon Rumbold, who was born on March 5, 1920, attended the Elmwood School and went to St. Andrew’s jn 1933. He was in the first XI for three years and the first XV for two. He took a prominent part in all sport, and in 1936 he was a school prefect, a platoon sergeant in the cadet corps, pianist in the orchestra, and leader of the school debating team. He captained the first XI in this year. Last year Mr Rumbold took his third section of the LL.B, degree, and in 1938 he won the Butterworth prize for Homan Law and took part in the Joynt School debate. He is a member of the second XV. This year he is completing his LL.B. He is a committeeman and assistant treasurer of the Law Students’ Society, and treasurer of the Dialectic Society. He also sang in the Christchurch Centennial Festival Choir. Mr Rumbold aims at the degree of Bachelor of Civil Law or Doctor of Philosophy in Law.
