“ The Timaru Herald ” November 23, 1880 Temperance Extraordinary There was again no occupant of the police cells last evening. It is now over a week since a person had been taken into custody in Timaru for drunkenness. Circus Electrically Lighted W. H. Cole's circus and menagerie, now in the North Island, will be exhibited in Timaru on Saturday, December 18. It is described as being both larger and better in both divisions than any other that has ever been in the Colony, and our telegrams state that it is drawing well in the North. A particularly interesting feature is that it is illuminated at night by an electric light. Farmers’ Co-operation At a meeting of the provisional directors of the Canterbury Farmers’ Co-operative Association, held at the Grosvenor Hotel on Saturday, Mr Henry Green, of Timaru, was appointed ad interim secretary of the Association until the appointment of the permanent directors. We are glad that the shares of the Association continue to be taken up in a manner which renders the floating of the scheme a certainty. This evening Mr W. B. Howell will deliver an address at the schoolroom, Pleasant Point, explanatory of the proposals of the Association. A Miserable Place It is strange to what extremes in word and deed the Jealousy of outsiders against Timaru will lead them. On Friday the agent of a large travelling company was on his way from Christchurch to Timaru. and by chance asked a fellow traveller—a Government official residing in the City oi the Plains—what the population ol this place was. He was surprised tc learn that it was a miserable village there not being more than 3000 in the town and suburbs, and he made up hi mind to pass on. On arrival at th« railway station, however, he determined to see for himself, and aitei doing so and making further inquiries he was still more surprised to And ou that the population of the town anc suburbs was fully 7000.
