THE LORD’S PRAYER

RECITAL TO CONTINUE IN SCHOOLS By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, November 21. The opinion that the Wellington Education Board’s instruction permitting the Lord’s Prayer to be recited by children at the opening of schools, subject to the approval of the head teachers and committees concerned, could be of no legal effect was conveyed in a letter from the Director of Education, Dr. E. C. Beeby, received at a meeting of the Board. Dr. Beeby said it was not clear from the board’s letter of October 17 nor its circular to the schools on September 24 that the board had a full understanding of the legal issues involved. He therefore found it his duty to point out to the board what the law was. Moving that the letter be received, Mr T. W. McDonald said “It is too childish. We have listened to all this before from Dr. Beeby. We are still going on irrespective of anything he may say.” The motion was carried without dissent.
