WAIMATE LARGE ENTRIES

Good Support For Show Strong Pig Section Entries for the Waimate A. and P. Association’s show on November 30. have reached 664 compared with 642 when entries closed last year. By show day last year, however, delayed entries brought the total to 680, and if the same increase is recorded this year, it is possible that the record of 708 obtained in 1937 will be passed. A substantial increase, as expected, has been shown in the pig section, the number rising to 81 compared with 14 last year. A fall appears likely in the sheep entries, which so far have reached 175 compared with 202 last year. Cattle remain about the same, 27 entries having been obtained. More horses will be on exhibition, as last year’s number was 147 as against 203 already entered this year. Sheep dogs and collie trials are about the same, and with the exception of home industries, the miscellaneous section is better supported. Children’s handwriting, a section which swelled last year’s entries, has fallen by half, last year’s figure being 56. BOYS FOR FARM WORK An effort is being made by the Placement Office in Waimate to secure extra help for farmers during harvest, and at the same time to obtain positions for boys leaving school. Mr V. A. Dixon, placement officer of Timaru, visited Waimate yesterday and stated that he had obtained a good response from the Waimate School, where boys of a suitable type had offered themselves for harvest work. Lists were being compiled and would be made available to farmers at an early date. The pay for all boys under 17 was at the rate of 1/- per hour plus keep, or 8/- a day with keep. It was the aim of the placement service to assist boys in obtaining positions in their chosen vocations. At the same time the assistance boys could give to harvest operations would provide against the possibility of a | shortage of workers. SALVATION ARMY CONCERT A concert by the Salvation Army to celebrate the anniversary of the Sunday School, attracted a large attendance. Prizes were presented by the Mayor (Mr G. Dash), who presided. The programme extended over three hours and was chiefly made up of group items, and the performers were mainly children who deserved credit for giving the concert such a high standard. Individual performers on the large programme were: Stan Mills and Janet Phillips (dialogue); Harry Bray with girl singers (action song), Elder Willowby and Joyce Smith (dialogue); Mrs Phillips assisted by Mr W. Duckett and 11 small girls (descriptive solo); Mr T. Phillips (comet solo); Betty Bracefield (recitation); Joan and Lillian Bailey (sketch); Victor Robinson (recitation). Items contributed to the programme by the primary department were: Leslie Allfrey (recitation); Rona Buckingham (recitation); Lillian Ottley (recitation); Stan Mills (solo); Janet Robinson (recitation); Janet Phillips (solo); Jim and Flora Hansen (recitation); Nola.
