BOYS’ BRIGADE
BAPTIST COMPANY On Tuesday the 4th Tlmaru Boys’ Brigade Company (Baptist) held its annual demonstration and presentation of awards in the Lascelles Hall The programme commenced with a short demonstration of drill and gymnastics by the Life Bovs’ team under Life Boy Leader Len Wright. This junior section of the Company showed by its programme that it has made good progress during the year. The parade of the Boys’ Brigade company under Captain E. L. Spence was inspected by Captain H. Grocott, Company Patron, Captain A. L. Waters secretary of the South Canterbury Battalion, and the Chaplain, Rev. A. L. Silcock. Tile Chaplain conducted devotions during which Private R. Manning read the Scripture. The Chaplain then welcomed the visitors including the officers of the Ist Timaru Girls’ Life Brigade Company. A wellexecuted demonstration of the Company’s activities followed. Military exercises and physical exercises were performed with precision. The gymnastic display under Captain E. Spence and Lance-Corporal G. Newlands received applause. A demonstration of ambulance work was given by Corporals R. Henderson and M. Howe, and Privates R. Manning and J. Reid, and a Morse display by signal lamp was given by Privates A. Bowden, s Hyndman, and B. Mills. During the evening a pianoforte solo was played by Private B. Hawkey and a cornet solo by Bugler R. Wilson. The following awards were presented by Captain Grocott:— Life Boys—Scripture C. McEwing; attendance, Alan Brown; behaviour, Eric Jeffries. Boys’ Brigade—One year service badge. Corporal M. Howe, Privates R. Wilson, R. Manning, D. Dickson, B. Dickson, B. Mills, S. Hyndman, R. Armstrong, A. Bowden. Gymnastic badge: Corporals R. Henderson and M. Howe, Lance-Corporal G. Newlands, Privates R. Armstrong, A. McArthur, and I. Drysdale. Ambulance certificate: Corporals R. Henderson and M. Howe, Privates B. Shipman, R. Armstrong, I. Armstrong, R. Manning, j. Reid, C. Christian, B. Dickson, and D. Dickson. Morse Certificates: Corporal M. Howe, Lance-Corporal G. Newlands, Privates R. Wilson, A. Bowden, B. Mills, s. Hyndman, and I. Drysdale. Wayfaring certificates: Corporals R. Henderson and M. Howe, LanceCorporal G. Newlands, Privates R. Armstrong, A. McArthur, B. Mills, and J. Reid. Drummers' badge: Corporal M. Howe, Lance-Corporal G. Newlands. Book prize for most successful collector during 8.8. Week: Private A. McArthur. Captains Grocott and Waters and Mr D. G. Rutherford, president of the governing committee, spoke congratulating officers and boys on a very effective display and the conclusion of a successful year. Captain Spence thanked the instructors Messrs H. Fraser (Morse), F. Burbery (Ambulance) and J. Sutherland (knot-tying and compass reading).
