On Saturday there will be racing at Ellerslie and Levin, and trotting at Forbury. • • * * Only five horses were nominated for the Wakanui Handicap, the open sprint at Ashburton, and two of the five are in the Tinwald Handicap also. T. R. George holds a strong hand with two-year-olds this season. Payroll has won four races, Par Avion three, Erlnscourt two and Corn Prince two. • ♦ * • Catanach (a half-brother to Royal Banquet) carried his trainer A. Lord at 131 b overweight when he finished third in the Novice Stakes at Hastings. This is likely to be a costly placing. Ronald Logan is an acceptor for the Hurricane Handicap at Forbury. As a result of his second in the Sapling Stakes, and his win in the Riccarton Stakes, the Orari-trained three-year-old is now assessed on 3.36. At its meeting on Saturday the Napier Park Club put through £lO,OOO for the first time in a decade. It decided at the eleventh hour to try the wln-and-place system, and the turnover would have been higher if there had been more time to prepare for the change. ♦ • • • Five seconds and a third in seven starts is the record of Vascones this season against some of the best sprinters in commission. Vascones is raced by grandsons of the late G. G. Stead, and carries the famous yellow jacket and black cap. In her comparatively short, but successful, career to date Payroll has had the experience of twice sharing winning honours. She divided with Nuna in the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes last month and with her stable-mate, Corn Prince, in the Pioneer Handicap on Saturday. Night Pilot, who has been in Sydney for several months, is due to arrive back at Auckland within the next few days to carry Mrs W. D. Graham’s colours in the Great Northern Derbv. The son of Nightraid and Lytup has done very little racing in Australia, but recently showed Improved ability, and the experience and travelling should stand him in good stead. The safety number at Forbury is 11 and not more than 14 horses may be started from one line. On the nominations there appeared to be a risk of some divisions being necessary, but the Achilles Handicap (15) is the only one in which the acceptors exceed the safety number and it is pretty certain that no division will be required. After the Auckland summer meeting there will be practically no weight-for-age races in New Zealand to suit Royal Chief, and as he must receive 10.0 or more in handicaps it will occasion no surprise if he were sent to Randwick for the autumn meeting. If he could be landed there in his present condition, Australians would see a better Royal Chief than they have known in the past. Prior to’ his race at Riccarton on Saturday an offer understood to be of four figures was made for Sir Amyas, but his breeder-owner-trainer, D. J. McDonald, of Wingatul, was not tempted. There has not been an outstanding Paladin horse for some seasons, but this four-year-old stallion promises to elevate his sire into prominence again. Round Up is working regularly and may be seen out at Ellerslie in the Alison Cup. Round Up was the best handicapper seen in Auckland for years and because of the weights he was being allotted last season, by virtue of his many successes, he was sent to Australia, where he failed to reproduce anything like his best form. Not at an age where improvement can reasonably be expected, Round Up may find it difficult to succeed against his younger rivals. Symbol, who revealed great improvement at the Cup meeting, was bred by Mr T. H. Lowry, and was bought by Miss Edgar Jones for 120gns. Symbol is held on lease by trainer C. C. McCarthy, who has a two-year-old filly, by Solicitor General from Helen Gold, bred and owned by Miss Jones, in his stable. This is a half-sister to Cymric, in the same team, who also was bred by Miss Jones. Symbol’s dam, Symballo, is by Psychology from Symbolism by Symington, and she produced other smart gallopers in Symcony and The Crooner. .... Some commentators rate Belle Cane as the best three-year-old that raced at the Cup meeting, but form and figures do not support this view. There could be no comparison between her win in the hack plate with 7.2 and Enrlch’s Stewards’ victory with 7.12, and in the Derby Belle Cane was beaten by four colts. Subsequently she won the Oaks, but this took eight seconds longer than the Derby to run, and Cherry Bay (runner-up in the Oaks) made a poor showing in the Stonyhurst Handicap. Belle Cane is likely to Improve more than some of the three-year-olds which defeated her in the Derby, but she will require to do so before she is entitled to be rated above them ai Beau Vite was nominated for the Auckland Cup, and although it is doubtful if he will run his weighting with Royal Chief is exciting interest in the north. Prior to the Metropolitan it was certain that Beau Vite would be on top, as his fourth in the Melbourne Cup with 9.7 looked rather better than Royal Chief's fifth in the New Zealand Cup with 9.6. Beau Vite, however, has no handicap performance as good as Royal Chief's Metropolitan with 9.12, and if their weights were allotted on handicap racing the Riccarton horse would have to be given pride of place. It is possible that Beau Vite’s weight-for-age record will turn the scale, but whichever wav it goes there will be only a pound ot two between the two, who will have tn give a good deal of weight to the neantst of the others.
