STRONG FORCE
Home Guard Is Vital Defence Unit British Official Wireless (Received November 20, 6.30 p.m.) RUGBY, November 19. Speaking in a House of Commons statement the Under-Secretary of the War Office, Sir Edward Grigg, described the Home Guard as a product of two forces—one the force of events and the other the force of British character and tradition. The origin of the Home Guard, Sir Edward Grigg said, was the determination of British men that what happened in France should not happen here. Although the army ranks were to be given this force it would still preserve its village green workshops or pithead character and would produce its own staff of Instructors for which it was full of talent. Sir Edward Grigg said that the strength of the Home Guard was enormous, being five or six times that of the Territorial Army.
