Timaru Group Command Mr E. D. Mcßae Appointed Mr E. D. Mcßae was appointed Timaru Group Commander of the Home Guard at a meeting of the Timaru Home Guard Committee yesterday. Mr Mcßae, president of the Timaru Returned Soldiers’ Association, and a well-known businessman, saw service throughout the last war, during which he was granted a commission. Mr Mcßae enlisted in August, 1914, and left New Zealand with the Mam Body as a sergeant in the Machine Gun Section of the Otago Mounted Rifle Regiment. He served in Egypt and on Gallipoli, arriving on the Peninsula early in May, 1915, and remaining until after the August advance, when he was invalided to hospitals in Malta and England. He returned to Egypt, in January, 1916. and went to France as a member of the newly-formed 2nd New Zealand Ma-

chine Gun Company, at the same time gaining promotion to Company Quar-termaster-Sergeant. After the Battle of the Somme Mr Mcßae was posted to the Officers’ Training Corps at Oxford and was granted a commission, after which he was posted to the 4th New Zealand Machine Gun Company, which was formed under Captain (now Brigadier) L. M. Inglis, M.C. When the New Zealand Machine Gun Battalion was formed early in 1918, Mr Mcßae was posted to Headquarters, first as transport officer and later as intelligence officer and assistant-adjutant, and he carried out adjutant’s duties in Cologne during the occupation until March, 1918. Mr Mcßae is one of the most active members of the Timaru Returned Soldiers’ Association, and after several years on the executive, was elected president at the last annual meeting.
