Sergeant A. H. Barnes, of Greymouth, has received notice of transfer to take charge of the Taihape police district. Mr L. B. Musket, of Wellington, has been appointed assistant treasurer of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Mr Musket has been in the treasurer’s office for 15 years. Captain S. C. Reid, M.C., formerly camp commandant of the Hopu Hopu military camp, has been appointed to the 29th Infantry Battalion, Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Mr R. Merrett Wilkinson has been elected a member of the Pharmacy Board of New Zealand, representing chemists of the combined Otago and Southland districts. Dr. F. L. Parton, a graduate of the Otago Medical School, who is at present stationed at a hospital at Horsham, Essex, England, has received the qualification of the Royal College of Surgeons, London. Lieutenant E. W. Garner, R.N.V.R., has been appointed to command the Auckland Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in succession to Commander F. A. Hull, R.N. (retired), who has been recalled to England to rejoin the Navy. The Minister of Marine, the Hon. D. G. McMillan, is to be a candidate for the position of president of the New Zealand Labour Party at the election to take place at the 1941 Easter conference to be held at Wellington. Mr J. Roberts is the present president, and Dr. McMillan vice-president. A resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr J. B. Wood was passed at a meeting of the South Canterbury Chamber of Commerce last night. Mr Wood, said the president (Mr W. S. Minehan), had been associated with the Chamber for a number of years and took a keen interest in its affairs. Cabled advice has been received of the death in Shanghai of the Rev. G. W. Gibb, M.A., late general director of the China Inland Mission. Mr Gibb twice visited New Zealand during his term of service as general director. He had recently been replaced by Bishop W. Houghton. Mrs Gibb Is at present in Shanghai.
