Y.M.C.A. WORK FOUR MORE OFFICERS TO GO TO EGYPT Four New Zealanders are to be sent to Egypt to carry on Y.M.C.A. work among the British troops stationed there. The men are at present serving as Y.M.C.A. officers in camps and Air Force stations in New Zealand, and are to go to Egypt at the request of the British Y.M.C.A. They are Messrs H. A. Tankersley, who is stationed at Wigram, J. R. McClure, of Te Rapa, A. M. Wall, of Wingatui, and N. J. Paltridge, of Waverley. It is not clear why the British authorities found it necessary to seek the aid of the New Zealand Y.M.C.A., but it is surmised that so many men have been called up in Britain that it is difficult to get fit men with the necessary qualifications. Reports from New Zealanders serving with the Y.M.C.A. in Egypt show clearly that fit men are necessary, the work involving long hours and arduous travelling about the Western Desert. It is a tribute to the Y.M.C.A. officers already in Egypt, and a source of pride to officials in the Dominion, that the British authorities should have asked for New Zealanders to fill the posts. TWO MEN GAOLED BREACH OF SHIPPING SAFETY REGULATIONS By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, November 19. The first breaches of the Shipping Safety Emergency Regulations, 1940, in Auckland, resulted in Henry Jones, aged 25, a labourer, and William Towson Lother, aged 22, a seaman, being each sentenced in the Magistrate’s Court to one month's Imprisonment. The police said that several days ago Lother was granted a temporary permit to board an overseas ship to interview the officers regarding employment. He got a job. and, retaining the permit, foolishly handed it to Jones on Saturday to board the same ship in search of a job. A constable accosted Jones at the top of the gangway. Jones admitted the facts. Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M., said both men had been guilty of conspiracy to defraud the police and the shipping company. The Court must assist the police.
