WITHDRAWALS BY JAPANESE
New Move In East Suggested United Press Association—Bv Electric Telegraph—Copyright HONG KONG, November 5. Indications are increasing that the Japanese are shortening their lines drastically by withdrawing from several zones, especially in south and central China. Chinese columns are following the retreating Japanese, who are nearing the port of Yamchow, which supplied the Japanese in Kwangsi. Similar withdrawals are reported from Chungshan, across the estuary from Hong Kong, from Swatow, and from Yochow, in Hunan. The Japanese Dome! News Agency has announced that the Japanese have abandoned Waichow Island, off the coast of Kwangtung Province, which was used as a naval base. Apparently it is part of the general withdrawal from Kwangsi Province. Other towns between Nanning and Yamchow have also been given up. The “Chinese Daily News” published in Chungking, suggests that the withdrawals are the preparation for a desperate Japanese attempt to seize Singapore or the Dutch East Indies before Anglo-American pressure crystallises.
