Oct. 28—Poverty Bay Hunt. Trotting Oct. 26, 28—Auckland T.C. Oct. 26, 28—Greymouth T.C. Oct. 28—Oamaru T.C. Oct. 26, 30—Auckland T.C. Nov. 2—lnvercargill T.C. Nov. 2—Wellington T.C. First race at Washdyke to-morrow at 12.30. Trains are timed to leave Timaru for the racecourse to-morrow at 11.7 and 12.3. Eight New Zealand Cup candidates are acceptors for the Tescheinaker Handicap. Payroll, with a dead-heat and a first to her credit, is the principal two-year-old winner so far this season. Nominations for the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meeting (November 2), are due to-day., It is not expected that many of the nineteen horses nominated for the Trotting Cup will miss the first acceptance to-day. Capricious was never prominent in either of her races at Wingatui. Winning Rival did even worse, and neither looks a Cup proposition. For his win in the Epsom Handicap, High Caste was rehandicapped 51b. (to 9.2 in the Caulfield Cup), 31b (to 9.0) in the Melbourne Cup; and 21b (to 9.9) in the Cantala Stakes. L. G. Morris has been appointed starter at Stratford. This is the third club that has decided to employ him, and it is not improbable that he will relinquish training before iong. High Caste has now defeated Ajax four times in six encounters, yet Victorians seem unable to realise that their champion is not really great. Once he Is tested Ajax Is quickly beaten. The top of the New Zealand Cup handicap is thinning out. Of the first dozen on the list Willie Win, Royal Appellant, Peerless and Thermidor have been scratched, and Beau Repaire and Yogi are doubtful starters. J. T. Jamieson has two strings to his bow in the Caulfield Cup—High Caste and Gladynev. Stigmatised as a nonstayer after his defeat in the Derbies. High Caste later won over a mile and a half at w.f.a. at Flemington, and in the Caulfield Cup he was made a liberal allowance for his alleged lack of stamina. Gladynev is still the enigma of the race, the result of which appears to depend on whether he has recaptured his New Zealand form.

The Opaki course, on which the Master ton meeting is being held, is bigger than the majority in the North Island. The circumference is a mile and a quarter, and there is a straight of three furlongs. Trainers who talk too freely to representatives of the pink press are unwise. A week before the Epsom Handicap J. T. Jamieson declared that High Caste was not the horse he used to be. Now a good many Australians will be waxing ironical over “those New Zealanders again.” After reconsidering the charge of interference with Manawai, the stewards of the Kurow Jockey Club decided to suspend T. H. Gunning from driving until October 31. In effect, the term of suspension is approximately three weeks. The penalty will now be considered by the Trotting Association. The Caulfield Cup will be run tomorrow. For the first time the race is to be held at Flemington, as a result of military occupation of the Caulfield racecourse. The Flemington track is bigger than the Caulfield one. with fewer bends, and the Cup contest will call for more stamina than usual. Features of South Canterbury meetings In recent years have been big fields, and spectacular races in the mile and a quarter handicaps. Fifteen acceptors and thirteen probable starters ensure that there will be no falling away to-morrow so far as the field is concerned. A fortnight ago Beaulivre was described in Sydney as the best horse New Zealand had sent across the Tasman for ten years. Now there has been a switch, and Beau Vite is hailed as the best galloper bred in the Dominion since Phar Lap. There are always worshippers for the rising sun. When Agog won the hurdle race at Ellerslie it was his first success for over two years, and it looks as if he was lucky to win, for Lapidarian had the event won when he fell at the last fence. A couple of seasons back Agog was regarded as a comer, but he has not fulfilled expectations. Dominant was 17 when she produced Beau Vite. The ages of the dams when some earlier cracks were foaled may be interesting:—Stepniak 21, Advance 17, Nightmarch 14, Limerick 12, Amythas 11, Amounts 11, Carbine 11, Gloaming 8, Desert Gold 7, Bobrikoff 6, Heroic 6, and Phar Lap 6. The Tetratema horse Theio is going to infuse some colour into racing in the Dominion. Salutation, who won at Wingatui, is a roan filly; and Drake’s Drum, who ran at Opahe yesterday, is a grey. Drake’s Drum, who is a halfbrother to Admiral Drake and Francis Drake, is expected to turn cut really good. Peter’s Find, the Cambridge-trained three-year-old who won the Challenge Stakes at New Brighton, is engaged in the Derby at Addington and in the Champion Stakes and Futurity Stakes at Ashburton. Peter’s Find will not have to meet Special Force in the Derby, but the Washdyke colt will be on hand at* Ashburton. Great Fair, although seven times placed in the last twelve months, was a maiden when he achieved success in the Kapiti Hurdles at Otaki. The Cape Horn gelding was unlucky in not winning in his previous start, as he dislodged his rider when he stumbled on landing over the last hurdle at Foxton. Great Fair was then in front, appearing to have* the race at his mercy. Lambourn, who won the main handicap at Opaki, is by Bulandshar from April Fool (dam of Beaupartir). Last season he won two juvenile events, including the Pacific Handicap at Trantham, and was regarded as a Derby prospect. He failed to make the grade in class events, but his admirers declared that he required time, and it is not unlikely that they were correct. The Free-for-all to be run on the third day of the August meeting at Addington has the following condition attached: “Notwithstanding payments for nominations and acceptances having been made, the committee reserves the right to select the horses which shall go to the post. The selections to be made immediately after final payments have been made.” All fees in respect of any horse rejected are to be refunded. OAMARU T.C.
