OBITUARY

MR THOMAS HAMILTON The death occurred at his residence, Waihao Downs on Wednesday night of Mr Thomas Hamilton, aged 73. a wellknown farmer and a former president of the Waimate A. and P. Association. Mr Hamilton was born at Darvell, Scotland in 1867. and after working as a weaver in a lace factory, came to New Zealand in 1891 in the sailing ship Torrens. On the way he spent a few months in Australia. He spent seven years at South brook farming, then drew a section in the Waikakahi ballot in 1899. which he farmed up to the time of his death. In ills public career Mr Hamilton was a member of the Ikawai School committee for 28 years. 13 years of which he was chairman. He was also a strong supporter of the Waihao Downs Presbyterian Church, being an elder and treasurer for many years. Mr Hamilton was a J.P. for 29 years, his term in that office being one of the longest in the Waimate district. Among his other interests Mr Hamilton was connected with the South Canterbury Flour Milling Coy. He took a prominent part in the Prohibition movement. Altogether he could be justly described as one who readily supported anything for the good of the county and his support was frequently in demand. Mr Hamilton became a member of the Waimate A. and P. Association in 1913, and on October 19. 1920 he was elected a life member. He was president during 1924. A son. Mr T. B. W. Hamilton, was president last year. Mr Hamilton's enthusiastic support did much to build up the Waimate show, and he backed up his interest by being a strong exhibitor, particularly in the sheep classes. He was also a member of the Waimate branch of the Farmers’ Union, being on the executive committee for a number of years. In 1924, he was elected a member of St. Augus- | tine’s Lodge. Mr Hamilton married Miss Deaven, of Geraldine in 1902. She was a daughter of Mr Thomas Deaven, formerly of Oxford. Mr Hamilton is I survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters: Mr T. B. W. Hamilton, “Redcliffs,” Waimate Mr Geo. Hamilton. Glenavy; Mrs E D. Stewart. Rakaia; Mrs F. Cain, Peel Forest; Mrs J. R. Blunden, Redcliffs, Waimate. With his wife Mr Hamilton was in Great Britain when the present war broke out and since his return he had been in failing health. LIEUT. J. B. STEPHENSON By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, October 17. The death occurred in the Auckland Hospital of Lieut. John Blythe Stephenson, R.N.V.R., of H.M.S. Achilles. Lieutenant Stephenson, who was 29 and married, was an accountant oy occupation and his home was in Wellington. He had been a keen member of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve for a number of years and was commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in 1935. After the outbreak of the war he underwent courses of instruction and was posted to the Achilles in July. The funeral will be conducted with full naval honours. A naval party, consisting of 25 officers and 180 ratings, will take part. AUNTIE’S MISTAKE A little girl was spending the school holidays with an aunt. Unfortunately she developed a cold, and auntie was very keen to have the cold fixed up before the little girl returned home. She offered her some medicine, but the litle girl indignantly said: “What, can’t you buy ‘Baxter’s’ here?” This is another true incident that illustrates the widespread confidence that has been engendered by the wonderful qualities of “Baxter’s.” People who have proved the value of “Baxter’s” for coughs, colds and sore throats, just cannot understand anyone who does not immediately fly to "Baxter’s” when such evils threaten. Experience has shown that there is nothing to equal “Baxter’s,” although every year fresh remedies make their appearance. “Baxter’s” has beaten allcomers for 75 years, and to-day sells better than ever. That is the proof. ..
