ASCENDING PARACHUTIST
A Corporal of the Black Watch on sentry duty on a water tower mistook a puff of anti-aircraft smoke in the distance for a German parachutist. He gave the alarm, parties were turned out, and a long search was made. When no trace of the alleged parachutist could be found, his officer pressed him for confirmation. “Have you no doubt at all in your mind, Angus?” asked the officer. “Weel, sir, I had nane at a’ till I saw him goin’ up again.”
