UNKNOWN HEROINE

RESCUE WHEN MEN FAILED Far from the clash and valour of war. an English seaside girl gave a shining example of bravery and modesty on Bournemouth’s sands the other day. When Horace Jerwood, aged 53 civil servant, of London, evacuated to Bournemouth, went bathing with two companions, named Gibson and Miles, he got into difficulties 200 yards from shore. A fairly rough sea was running. The other men were not good swimmers, and had to give up their attempt to rescue Jerwood. who struggled violently when Gibson grabbed his wrist. Gibson and Miles swam back to the shore, but the girl, who was bathing near by, ran along the beach and plunged in without hesitation. She reached Jerwood. and brought him to the beach. But her effort was in vain. He was dead by then. While a doctor and others were trying artificial respiration, the heroine slipped away. She has not been traced.
