NOTES ON THE RACING

(Special to “The Timaru Herald.") CHRISTCHURCH, October 12. Delightful weather favoured the New Brighton Trotting Club for its meeting, which attracted a big crowd. There was some good racing, a special feature being the success of C. S. Donald s stable, which won three races. Milestone Scores Royal Parrish was smartest out m the innovation Handicap, from Milestone and Native Ruler, but Royal Parrish and Native Ruler soon broke, Milestone leading past the stand, after half a mile, with Kilmorick, Patti Nelson, Princess Beverley, Manian and Elite Rey next. The last-named broke going to the back. Milestone was just clear of Kilmorick, Patti Nelson and Manian at the home turn. Patti Nelson broke on reaching the straight

and Milestone held his place to win by nearly a length from Kilmorick. who beat Manian by a length. Patti Nelson was six lengths back, with Pegasus Bay and Princess Beverley close up. Milestone carried the colours of Mr J. R. McKenzie, who bought him as a young horse, though he was raced in j other interests for some time. He is a six-year-old from Escapade, a highclass trotter in her day. An Overdue Win Gold Bar. a strong win favourite, ran past Warning. Superior Rank and Silver Laddie to take the lead in the Shirley Handicap, after a furlong. This w’as still the 'order at the end of half a mile. Gay Lady, Stylish Boy and Sir Julien being next, in a close-running field. Huguenot and Royal Surprise were handy along the back. There w’as not much change to the home turn, where Warning dropped out. Gold Bar led to the straight but tired, Superior Rank drawing out to beat Silver Laddie by three lengths. Huguenot was two lengths back. Gold Bar was fourth, after a gap, then Royal Grattan (who finished strongly) and Shadow Queen. The winner’s performance was impressive. It was his first success for a long time, but he will get more money if he keeps sound. Sir Julien, sold at a big price, went wrong in the wind soon afterwards. This was his first race since he was operated on and he went well for more than a mile. A Good Performance A mix-up after the field had gone a little more than a furlong took some of the interest out of the Walter Thompson Handicap. Ferry Post and Cantata lost ground through tangling at the start. Great Don led out from Accountant. Going out of the straight, Smile Again fell, leaving Great Don. Accountant. Harold Guy and Ringtrue well clear, most of the others suffering interference. With half the journey gone the field had closed up, Cruiser being in fourth place, with Nelson Eddy and Ferry Post also handy. Cruiser dropped out at the home turn, having raced most of the way with a damaged sulky wheel. Accountant ranged alongside Great Don at the 1 entrance to the straight and then went on to beat Harold Guy without much to spare. Ringtrue was close up. followed by Great Don. who tired. Then came Ferry Post, who registered a great performance, as in addition to losing ground at the start, he was hampered on the journey. Challenge Stakes A field of 10 took part in the New Brighton Challenge Stakes, for three-year-olds, and they were a good looking lot. Shadow Maid and Diamond Jim were smartest out, but the latter soon broke, leaving Shadow Maid to lead Mickey Rooney, Walter Moore, Becky Parrish, Festivity and Peter’s Find after two furlongs, in that order. Surprise Potts moved up along the back and at the half-mile post Shadow Maid was closely followed by Walter Moore. Mickey Rooney and Peter's Find, with Festivity and Surprise Potts next. Mickey Rooney retired at the home turn and Walter Moore and Shadow Maid were in trouble when the straight was reached, though they were still in front. Peter’s Find was in front a furlong from the post, with Surprise Potts next. Surprise Potts finished well, but Peter’s Find stalled him of! decisively by a neck. Shadow Maid was more than a length away, with Walter Moore next. The winner, who is by Peter Bingen, came from Auckland with a reputation, having won a race there a week previously. He is in other classic events here and he locks like playing his part well in all of them. Easy for Kilrea Mazaire and Waiponi Girl broke early in the Avon Handicap. Jovial was first out from Lady Vasclyne and after three furlongs these two, with Old Faithful, were together in the lead, with Mendel, Kilrea and Philario next. Old Faithful broke going out of the straight, where Great Blaze moved up. Half a mile from home Lady Vasclyne and Jovial were showing the way to Mendel, Kilrea, Great Blaze, Willow Bank and Philario, with Black Surprise improving her position. Jovial dropped out at the home turn, and Kilrea took the lead at the entrance to the straight, where Willow Bank also headed Lady Vasclyne, with Great Blaze handy. Kilrea went on to win easily by two lengths and Great Blaze beat Willow Bank by a neck. Lady Vasclyne and Philario were next. Great Blaze broke after going a furlong, going back on Trireme, who fell, while Black Surprise suffered serious interference. Won All The Way Native Huon led all the way to win the Spitfire Handicap, a well-earned success, her first since she joined J. B. Pringle’s stable. The outstanding effort of the race, however, was that of Jenny’s Guy to finish a close second from the back mark. Bush Laddie, Parrish Guide. Arapai and Saganv-re broke at the start. Native Huon was followed out of the straight by Sister Mary. Header and Amonos. with Tan John and Mohican handy after half a mile. With half the journey gone, Aristotle and Sagamore also joined in. Jenny’s Guy moved up along the back. Keeping up her run, she followed Native Huon. Amonos and Tan J ,hn to the straight. A luriong from the post Jenny’s Guy challenged the leader, but Native Huon stalled her off bv a length. Amonos outstaying Tan John to gain third place, while Aristotle was clase up. Gracie Fields made a forward move after half a mile, but did not carry on. A Meritorious Win Ferry Post came with a great run in the straight to snatch a meritorious win in the Beach Handicap. Ned Worthy and Sandusky failed to go off. Mankind led out from Gold Ban*, these two being followed after two furlongs by Labcurman. Worthy Need ard Waitaki Power, with a big ounch in hot pursuit. Gold Bank was joined bv Worthv Need at the half-mdc post, where Rod Ranger. Mankind. Llewellyn’s Pride and Toorak were prominent in the next bunch, with Red Ranger improving his position. Gold Bank and Worthy Need led Llewellyn's Pride. Mankind and Waitaki Power to the straight, where Gold Bank and Mankind weakened. Worthy Need was then left in front, while Red Ranger challenged at the distance. Ferry Past then put in his claim on the outside, getting up to beat Worthy v eed by a neck. Red Ranger was half a length away, with two lengths to Waitaki Power and Llewellyn’s Pride. Good Form Shown Zincali registered impressive form to beat the warm favourite. Happy Locanda, in the Farewell Handicap, as he seemed hopelessly left when he went off in a tangle. Aircraft began smartly and soon opened up a gap of four lengths from Salalon and Sky Wink, who had Happy Locanda and Mendel in close attendance after half a mile. Aircraft still was showing clear of Salalon. Happy Locanda and Mendel at the home turn, where Zincali had made up a lot of hi.s leeway. Happy Locanda took the lead in the straight, but Zincali challenged a furlong from the past, winning decisively by half a length, while three lengths back Trireme came wtih a late dash to cut Mendel out of third money.

The part luck plays In the purchase of thoroughbreds as yearlings is emphasised by Beau Vite. He was offered at auction at the national sales ac Trentham in 1938. There were eight lots by Beau Pere catalogued, but only six were offered. The first lot sold was Benevolent, for whom Dr. M. G. Louisson paid 650 guineas. He is still a maiden. The next was Chevy Chase, bought bv Mr T. H. Lowry for 1000 guineas. She also Is a maiden. Mr W. R. Kemball bought the next lot for 650 guineas and took her to Australia, where under the name of Benzonia shd has raced moderately. Mr Low’p’ bought the next lot, Millament, for 1150 guineas, and she is still eligible for hack races. Mr Stewart, who attended the sale for the purpose of buying a Beau Pere yearling, was a bidder on three of these lots without getting one. but was rewarded when the next lot, a colt from Dominant, fell to his bid at 900 guineas. This was how Beau Vite, the champion of 1940, came under Mr Stewart’s ownership.
