HIGHFIELD TENNIS CLUB

At the Highfield Tennis Club Mr and Mrs Tweedy were briefly welcomed by the president, Mr R. Wilson, who said that he and his committee greatly appreciated the action of the Mayor and Mayoress in sparing the time to attend the function.

Mr Tweedy replied that it was a great pleasure to be present as he had happy recollections of several seasons as a member of the club. The club had grown considerably since then. and additional courts had been laid down. He congratulated the club on the fact that Mr J. S. Satterthwaite had been elected president of the South Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association tor a further term, and he. with th? secretary, Mr P. W. Young, had done very valuable work in the interests of the game. Mr Tweedy congratulated the Association on its fine work for the young players. A coach had been engaged last year and similar arrangements were being made for this year. Such encouragement was in the best interests of the game as it maintained a regular supply of young players. There were 1000 members of affiliated clubs in South Canterbury, and he hoped the sport would prosper in spite of the present difficult conditions. In declaring the season opened Mr Tweedy expressed appreciation of the honour of his election as patron of the club.
