TWO RECORDS GO

Boys’ High School Sports

Fine Display Of Work

Two senior records were broken and one equalled, and two junior records were equalled at the annual athletic sports of the Timaru Boys’ High School on Saturday. Splendid weather prevailed, and this made the occasion a most enjoyable one for the hundreds of parents and friends present. There was a fairly strong breeze at times and performers in tne distance events were under a handicap. Taken all round, the athletic prowess of the school suffered nothing as a result of the day’s performances. No distance performer of the type of J. E. Lovelock or V. P. Boot has been unearthed in recent years, but in R. C. Halliday the school has a hurdler who should go far. As was anticipated, he carried off the senior championship, taking all the sprint events and the high jump. He gave a polished display in the 120 yards hurdles, covering the distance in 16 seconds dead, thus clipping a fifth of a second off the record held jointly by himself, E. W. Ryan (1931) and B. W. T. Ritchie (1933). Halliday finished with 18 points. The runner-up in the championship will probably be W. E. Arden, who now has nine points, and who should win the steeplechase to-morrow. R. A. McKenzie has 10A points, but as he is not contesting the remaining championship event, he can only secure third place. McKenzie joins the band of record holders, as he improved the hop, step and jump distance from 41ft 7Sin put up by B. W. T. Ritchie in 1933 to 42ft 9iins. The junior championship went to R. Wills, with 131 points. Like Halliday, he secured his title over the shorter distances, equalling the previous records for the 100 yards, 11 4-5 seconds, held by S. Withell <1914), D. Wood (1927), D. McLean <1931), A. McLeod (1934) and K. A. Yardley (1937). He also equalled the 120 yards record <l3 4-5 seconds), held by McLean, G. B. Sara (1933) and Yardley. Wills has a good style, and should distinguish himself in senior ranks. The steeplechase tomorrow will decide the runner-up, as G. Campbell and R. M. Davie each has eight points. B. Marshall also has eight points, but is not a competitor in the steeplechase. One of the best events of the day was the inter-house relay, which was won by Simmers House after a fine contest. All three finalists were together with half a lap to go, and Arden, showing fine judgment, drew away in the straight to give his house the honour. During an interval the school entertained the big crowd with a fine display of marching and exercises. The school band made a good impression with their playing in this event. The Municipal Band also contributed enjoyable selections during the afternoon. Display of Work Opportunity was taken during the afternoon by a number of parents to inspect a display of work in the Assembly Hall and in the geography room, and they were greatly impressed with the high standard revealed. In the hall some of the products of the engineering and woodwork shops were on view, and they covered a wide range. A miniature bulldozer caught the eye. while ice skates, knives, cargo hooks, fishing rods and such like revealed finished workmanship. The same applied to the wheelbarrows, trays, tea waggons, stools, book shelves and step ladders which lormed the woodwork display. The wireless club also had an interesting exhibit, small sets being shown in the process of manufacture. The display in the geography room demanded some time to ensure full appreciation, points of interest including a wide variety of modern maps, meteorological charts and a variety of Empire products. The school is possessed of many valuable instruments which served to indicate the type and value of the instruction being imparted. Results of events were:—
