GOLF USSHER RETAINS TITLE

Kerr Beaten In Great Game Intermediate Honours To Fairbrother G. A. Ussher. who won the senior golf championship of the Timaru Club last year, successfully defended his title yesterday by defeating E. G. Kerr jr. three up and two to play over 36 holes, in a match which was voted one of the best seen in a club final for many years. The scoring in the morning was almost sensational. Ussher registering a 67 and Kerr a 69 against a scratch score of 70. Ussher was out in 33 and Kerr in 35 and both returned in 34, three strokes under regulation figures, for Ussher to be one up. Ussher was out in 33 in the afternoon to Kerr's 35 to give him a commanding lead of four up at the turn. Considering that conditions were difficult because of a strong north-west wind in the morning and a stiff southerly in the afternoon, the golf was exceptionally good. At the end of 28 holes Kerr was five down, but he fought back magnificently to win two holes and keep the game alive until the thirty-fourth. Ussher was a worthy winner and his success lay in his ability to keep his seconds on the line. A remarkable feature of the game was that Kerr, who registered “birdie” fours at the tenth and eighteenth, lost both of these holes, Ussher securing “eagles.” Both men drove well from the tees, Kerr getting a shade more length. The putting in spile of minor blemishes was consistently sound. After losing Burnside, being one over, Kerr retrieved the situation at the next hole when he sank a 16-footer. for a “birdie" two. The match seesawed until the Ridge, where Ussher became one up with a nicely played

three. The next was halved in "birdie” threes and the ninth in regulation fours for Ussher to be one up. After long drives at the tenth Ussher found the green with his second and holed a 30ft. putt for an "eagle” three. At the Poplars which is 500 yards long, Kerr found the bunker with his second, but holed a long putt for a "birdie." The match was squared at The Terrace when Ussher failed to hole a threefooter. At the eighteenth. Ussher collected his second “eagle” of the match when, after a splendid second, he holed from 10ft, A "birdie” three at Burnside and a regulation three at Bumpy made Ussher three up, and this was increased to five when Ussher won the Ridge with a three and Chasm with a "birdie” three. Kerr retrieved a hole at the twenty-seventh with an orthodox four. After losing Seaview, owing to a sliced drive, Kerr was faced at The Terrace with a dormie five deficit and he showed commendable tenacity by reducing the lead with a “birdie” three. Winning the next hole with a wellplayed four, Kerr sank a longish putt for a tour at tire next, but Ussher who was about four feet away, made no mistake to halve the Hole and win a memorable match. Intermediate Following up his win in the knockout singles, G. Fairbrother added the intermediate championship to his credit yesterday when he defeated H. A. Scott two up and one to play over 36 holes. The scoring was good, and although the morning round was completed hr 81 by Fairbrother to his opponent's 82. the match was all square. In the afternoon Fairbrother turned one down, but he won the next two to be one up. Scott won the Poplars and Port Arthur was halved in threes. Scott won the Terrace with a well-played four, but Fairbrother levelled the score at Plantation and won the Gap and Midway with fives to annex the title. O. L. Robertson defeated H. G. Naylor six and five in the final of the junior championship over 36 holes Robertson was lour up in the morning round, which he completed in 83, an exceptionally good score for a junior final. Robertson maintained his form in the afternoon and may have bettered his morning score ‘ had he finished the round.
