W AIM ATE BRANCH The construction and arrangement of a debate was the subject of a talk given by the Mayor (Mr G. Dash) at the October meeting of the Waimate Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Arrangements were made for a debate at the December meeting on the subject “It is better for children to be brought up in the country.” between Mesdames M. Hayman and J. C. Hay on one side, and Mrs Preece and Miss Stewart on the other. Competitions resulted as follows: Narcissi. Mrs J. C. Hay 1. Miss Bennett 2 Anemone, Mrs J. C. Hay 1, Miss Barnett 2. Hyacinth. Mrs Preece 1. Mrs J. C. Hay 2. Polyanthus, Mrs J. C. Hay 1, Mrs Morrison 2. Rununculus, Mrs Hassall 1. Mrs Blakie presented a report c the executive meeting held in Timaru Good work was being done under the housekeeper scheme, and by the dressmaking classes under Miss McKenzie. It was decided that a large quilt made by members should be sent overseas for a soldier. Mr F. Milner, rector of the Waitaki Boys’ High School, will give a talk on world affairs at the Foresters’ Hall on November 1, when a collection will be taken in aid of the W.D.F.U. Rest Home.
