WAIMATE LIQUOR AT SHOW

Reason For Member’s Resignation Majority Decision Mr E. J. Meredith, of Morven, forwarded his resignation to the meeting of the committe of the Waimate A. and P. Association yesterday afternoon on the grounds that liquor was on sale at the show. The president <Mr E. G. Hay) was deputed to interview Mr Meredith. Mr R. Sinclair commented that he had been opposed to liquor at the show, but he believed in democratic rule. “We were beaten.” he said, "and had to accept the rule of the majority. If Mr Meredith is not prepared to accept the decision, we will have to agree to his resignation.” An offer from Mr R. Fortune to give a demonstration with collie dogs at the show, was accented. The borough has been divided into 26 blocks for collecting purposes, and each block has two cavassers. The blocks were allocated by ballot. The canvassers will have a fortnight to complete their work. It was stressed that to provide the required money in proportion to population, every person 16 years of age and over must be represented by a gift of £l. Judging from the gifts already received. it was evident that the community was alive to the great need. The allocation committee, Messrs T. A. Wilson, L. J. Collins and B. S. Runcij man, had completed an enormous amount of preliminary work, even to preparing the colecting cards which failed to arrive from Christchurch. INJURED BY PETROL EXPLODING As a result of the explosion of a small quantity of petrol in a tin, Hugh Cameron, a young married man of / viemore, Oma r ama, received severe burns about the face and head.
