Mr E. L. Robinson, of Dunedin, was last night appointed by the Timaru Borough Council to the position of assistant borough engineer.

Advice was received yesterday that Pilot Officer Robert Clifford Douglas McKenzie is reported missing. His next-of-kin is S. J. Moore, of Fendalton, Christchurch.

A motion of sympathy with Mr F. J. Rolleston, a former Mayor of Timaru, in the death of his mother, Mrs W. Rolleston, who died in Christchurch recently at the age of 96. was carried in silence at a meeting of the Timaru Borough Council last night.

Reference to the death of Mr W. T. Ritchie, a former chairman of the Timaru Harbour Board, was made by the Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy) at last night's meeting of the Timaru Borough Council, and a motion of condolence with the members of the family was carried in silence.

Congratulatory reference to the promotion of Mr T. G. Beck to the position of Public Works engineer, Christchurch, was made by the Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy) at last night’s meeting of the Timaru Borough Council. The Mayor said that the relations between the Council and Mr Beck had been of the best, and they wished Mr Beck every success in his new position.

Mr G. Benstead recently underwent a serious operation in Timaru Hospital, but is reported to be making good progress. Reference to his illness was made by the Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy) at last night’s meeting of the Timaru Borough Council, and it was decided to send Mr Benstead a letter of sympathy and to express a hope that he would enjoy a speedy recovery.

The Medical Superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, Dr. J. N. Craven, has received instructions from the War Office, London, to report overseas for service with the Royal Army Medical Corps. Dr. Craven, who has the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel, was granted extended leave of absence by the Hospital Board last night. He expects to leave New Zealand early next month. Dr. Craven, who has been Superintendent at the hospital since 1932, has a distinguished Great War record. With the rank of Captain he went to France in April, 1915, with the Ist Northumbria Field Ambulance, commanding a field ambulance in the latter stages of the war and returning from active service in June, 1919, as Lieutenant-Colonel. When he came to New Zealand in 1926 he was transferred to the reserve of the Royal Army Medical Corps. Dr. Craven was awarded the Military Cross and Croix de Chevalier of Legion of Honour.
