GERALDINE FARMERS’ UNION

PROVISION OF LABOUR Advice that the Placement Officer would be contacting all branches with a view to placing men from Public Works on farms was received in a letter from the provincial secretary (Mr A. B. Struthers) at a meeting of the Geraldine branch of the Farmers’ Union on Friday evening. The letter stated that a survey of all Public Works employees was being made and a subsidy scheme for farmers was likely to be introduced. The president (Mr W. S. Crotty) said it was probable that the officer might attend a meeting of the branch. Mr p. G. Withers, jr., said there were farmers in the district working themselves to death on their farms without assistance. He would like to see these men assisted. BASKETBALL Saturday’s games resulted as follows: Senior grade—High School 15 beat Orari Bridge 12; Waihi 14 beat Woodbury 7. Junior grade—High School 15 drew with Peel Forest 15; Orari 8 beat Old Girls 3; Rangitata 12 beat Orari Bridge B 11. PATRIOTIC FUNDS Contributions received to date for the Canterbury Patriotic Fund in the Geraldine district now total £l7l/7/5, reports the treasurer (Mr C. L. Kirby) Amounts previously acknowledged he said, totalled £63/17/9 and two further sums, £lOO from the Geraldine Racing Club and £7/9/8 from the Geraldine Young Farmers’ Club, were acknowledged. Of the total received 2107.9'8 had been forwarded to Christchurch. GOLF A men’s stroke match played on the Geraldine links on Saturday resulted as follows:
