The marriage took place in Timaru recently of Neil Robert, son of Mr and Mrs H. J. Page, Nelson, and Hazel Winifred, daughter of Mr and Mrs A. J. Priddle, Temuka.

The engagement is announced of Winifred Sarah Caroline, third daughter of Mr and Mrs R. H. Hewson, “Richlea,” Seadown, and Donald Alexander, eldest son of Mrs G. Eddington, and the late Mr A. Eddington, King Street, Timaru. | The Mayor, Mr W. G. Tweedy, reported to the Timaru Borough Council last night that 60 applications had been received for two positions at the Women’s Community Centre, and that Miss A. Sinclair had been appointed creche attendant, and Mrs Cuthill part time assistant to the caretaker.

Colonel and Mrs Falla, Wellington, have returned to England from a month in Egypt, where Colonel Falla was to meet General Freyberg. Mr Paul Falla, now secretary at the British Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, had a week’s leave to see his parents in Cairo.

Mrs Compton, of London, a former member of the “Belfrances Players,” and well known in amateur dramatic circles in Wellington before her marriage to Captain J. E. L. Compton eight years ago, attended a reception at the Mansion House given by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress for New Zealanders. Their Majesties were present and the Queen remarked to Mrs Compton that she had no idea there were so many New Zealanders

in London. The King was in naval uniform and the Queen was wearing dark blue velvet with wide bands of grey fox fur.

Here are several fashion points to look for—petersham collar and revers on a wool or worsted suit; creased or crumpled crown to a jaunty, smallbrimmed hat; large hip pockets to minimise the width of the waist, and real gold or platinum buttons on a tunic-like dinner gown. Accessories are being trimmed more than the suits they go with at the moment. Belts are braided, and for party occasions are studded with bright-coloured gems. Hem-stitching and embroidery decorate the backs of gloves. White gold initials glitter on pocket flap or hat ribbon.

A very pleasant evening was spent recently at the residence of Mr W. G. Collins, Rathmore Street, the occasion being a surprise party in honour of Miss Doreen Collins’ twentieth birthday. The evening was spent in community singing and games, musical items being given by Mrs J. Gillon, Misses A. Phillips and J. Marshall. A novelty competition was held after supper, Miss A. Phillips being the winner. Among those present were Mr and Mrs W. Collins, Mr and Mrs J. Gillon, Mr and Mrs L. Hobbs, Misses D. Collins, E. Thin, J. Flanagan, R. Gillon, D. Johnson, A. Phillips, J. Marshall, I. Gillon, F. Johnson and S. Collins, Messrs G. Thin, R. Stirling, L. Thin and M. Collins.
