RICCARTON NOTES

ANOTHER YEARLING Special to “ The Timaru Herald." CHRISTCHURCH, April 8. Some of the Riccarton horses who were racing on the West Coast arrived home yesterday, while others are expected back to-night. M. Conza will not return for some time yet, as he contemplates racing some of his team at the Nelson and Marlborough meetings. Nightcalm, who has shown slight signs of soreness, was not galloped on Saturday. He was on the track again this morning doing useful exercise, but the trip to Oamaru this week will depend on his condition in the next day or two. If he is a starter he will be ridden by the apprentice, M. Billington. P. Spratt will do the riding on N. J. Dwyer’s team at Oamaru—Miltiades, Prince Ruenalf and Nisi Prins. The following are other engagements made here: C. T. Wilson, Settlement, Petersham, Midguard, Royal Refrain; C. G. Humphries, Prudent Prince: A. E. Ellis, Good Health, Big Joe; D. R. Mackie, Rebellion. W. J. Cameron is keeping the two-year-old Roman Son in strong work and expects to race him in the maiden event at Waimate this month. He is a promising sort by Inflation, several of whose progeny have shown marked ability as gallopers. R. Sutherland has been working a couple of three-year-olds for a few months, and they are getting ready to show a bit of form. Probably they will be entered for the novice event at .the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting this month. One of them is a filly by Nightmarch from Peho, while the other is a gelding by Robespierre from a Nightraid-Peho mare. Peho, by Winkle from Little Owl, is a member of the Madowla family, from which many good winners were bred at the Stonyhurst Stud. H. and A. Cutts have received from Mr G. R. Macdonald a yearling Ally by Solicitor General from Capercailzie and they will make an immediate start to break her in, as a preparation for two-year-old racing next season. The filly, which is well grown, is a half-sister to Shikari, winner of the Dunedin Champagne Stakes and Canterbury Challenge Stakes. Their dam, Capercailzie, comes from a very successful Stonyhurst family, being by Autumnus from Kirriemuir, by Clanranald, from Madowla. One of Capercailzie's sisters is Wild Hind, the dam of Wild Chase. NELSON J.C. ACCEPTANCES oy Telegraph—Press Association NELSON. April 8.
